CIVILIZATION
Bronze first appeared as a photographic support in the series Civilization, which revisits the historically charged vestiges of archeological sites, sanctuaries, and ancient cities. Ruel creates a dialogue between the natural environment and monumental art through these double-exposure photographs, taken between 2006 and 2017, of world heritage sites or of several Wonders of the World, such as the necropolis of Giza (Egypt), the Great Wall of China, and the fortress of Masada (Israel). The use of copper or pewter as a printing surface is highly symbolic given the materials’ ability to mark the passage of time. The patina and warm colour of bronze is perfectly suited to the light, sand, rock and pigment of these historical sites, and greatly adds to the illusion and vibrancy of the work.
